Sri Lanka, an Inclusive Tourist Destination

EQUAL GROUND continues its commitment to creating safer, more empowering spaces for LGBTIQ people in Sri Lanka. The organisation recently launched a new initiative focused on inclusion within Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. This work aligns with EQUAL GROUND’s vision to create safe spaces and meaningful opportunities for LGBTIQ communities. Tourism plays a powerful role in shaping Sri Lanka’s global image and driving economic growth.

Recognising this, EQUAL GROUND aims to make Sri Lanka a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTIQ travellers worldwide. The initiative builds on EQUAL GROUND’s decade-long experience delivering DE&I training across Sri Lanka.

Over the past ten years, the organisation has worked with more than 50 corporate institutions nationwide. Drawing on this expertise, EQUAL GROUND now delivers tailored DE&I workshops for tourism stakeholders.

These include hotel staff, tour operators, guides, drivers, and other service providers. The workshops cover global LGBTIQ tourism trends and key aspects of inclusive travel. They also introduce concepts around sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Through this work, EQUAL GROUND supports tourism professionals in understanding diverse identities and lived experiences. This effort strengthens Sri Lanka’s reputation as a safe and inclusive destination for LGBTIQ travellers. The programme has already shown promising early results.

EQUAL GROUND conducted its first workshops with tourism teams in Kandy and Colombo. Participants engaged in open dialogue, awareness-building activities, and practical learning sessions. Many participants expressed enthusiasm and a commitment to champion inclusivity in their workplaces.

Following this response, EQUAL GROUND plans to expand training across all major regions. Alongside industry training, EQUAL GROUND also supports LGBTIQ individuals seeking tourism employment. The organisation now conducts workshops encouraging community members to explore careers in tourism.

These sessions promote safer workplaces while creating employment opportunities for LGBTIQ people. Participants learn about career pathways, professionalism, and opportunities within the sector. EQUAL GROUND successfully completed the first community-focused training session.

The workshop provided a supportive space to explore options and connect with industry professionals. The organisation plans to roll out these sessions across the country. This approach prepares LGBTIQ individuals with confidence, skills, and industry knowledge.

By addressing both industry readiness and community empowerment, the initiative creates lasting change. Through education and collaboration, EQUAL GROUND continues to lead inclusive tourism efforts in Sri Lanka. The organisation works toward a future where everyone feels welcome, respected, and safe.
