EQUAL GROUND is honoured that one of it's own has been selected Grand Marshal of Toronto Pride, one of the largest PRIDE celebrations in the world!

One of the largest PRIDE celebrations in the world, Toronto Pride, has selected Rosanna Flamer-Caldera as its International Grand Marshal for PRIDE week 2007. Rosanna has the unique honour of leading this year's Pride Parade in Toronto.

"What an honour to be the standard barer for LGBT in Sri Lanka and Asia. I am so thrilled and excited to be at Toronto Pride and to be chosen as the Grand Marshal...well it's a dream come true!" said Rosanna.

Rosanna is the Executive Director of EQUAL GROUND and is the current Female Co-Secretary General of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA).

Pride Week is an event held in Toronto, Ontario during the last week of June each year. It is a celebration of the diversity of the LGBT community in the Greater Toronto Area. It is the one of the largest organized Gay Pride festivals in the world (over 2 million attended in 2006), featuring several stages with live performers and DJs, several licensed venues, a large Dyke March, and the Pride Parade. The epicenter of Pride Week is the city's Church and Wellesley village, and both the Dyke March and the main Pride Parade are primarily routed along the nearby Yonge Street.

Pride Week is organized by Pride Toronto, a non-profit volunteer organization. A small number of staff support 20-30 volunteer committee coordinators, each responsible for an aspect of the festival or of the organisation's year-round activities.

Main events of Pride Week include the Dyke March and the Pride parade, the latter having some 400,000 in attendance in 2004.

Toronto's Pride Week evolved out of the mass protests that followed the 1981 Toronto bathhouse raids, and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005. In the 2005 parade, newly appointed Toronto police chief Bill Blair became the first chief of police in the city's history to personally take part in the parade.

In 2006, Pride Week was held from June 19 to June 25. The 2006 theme for Pride Week was "Fearless".

EQUAL GROUND was happy to donate over Rs.5 lakhs for the housing project for the families of Dutch Bar (in the Batticola area) that were left homeless and devastated in the aftermath of the Tsunami.

Through the SLS Tsunami Relief Trust, EQUAL GROUND was able to contribute towards the building of houses for those affected by the Tsunami at Dutch Bar. Built in an area called Thiraiimadu, the houses will provide shelter for over 47 families that were affected by the Tsunami of 2004.

Building has been slow due to many reasons, chiefly the escalation of the ethnic war on the East Coast and the North. In addition, the rise in prices of building materials, the lack of trained personnel to oversee the project in the area and other factors have delayed construction. However, through perseverance and the good graces of all those who have donated to this project, most of the houses are now up and running.

Our thanks to all of you who donated towards the EQUAL GROUND Tsunami fund and to SLS Tsunami Relief Trust for implementing the housing project and providing much needed shelter for the many families of Dutch Bar.

The three wheeler is primarily used as a means of transport for the people of the camp. This has been an immense help, especially at night and also during emergencies (like a woman in labour who was rushed to hospital recently). Sigaram Camp is still considered a temporary shelter. The many residents of this camp still have no permanent housing since the Tsunami. The ongoing hostilities in the East have also hampered efforts to reconstruct and things still go slowly in this area. EQUAL GROUND has pledged more money this year to this camp for things like food rations during the period of Ramazan and electricity.

In addition, EQUAL GROUND assisted the SLS Tsunami Trust with a generous donation to assist with the building of permanent housing for the Dutch Bar community in Batticaloa.

For those who have assisted EQUAL GROUND with donations to the Tsunami Relief and Reconstruction Project, we say thank you.

For more information on how your donations were distributed, please write us at: info@equal-ground.org or equalground@gmail.com.

Emily and Rosanna visited the state of the art archives and library at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Emily and Rosanna toured the state of the art archives at the Anderson Library at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The archive, located 120 feet below the mighty Mississippi river, is temperature, air pressure and humidity controlled with a life span for materials in its collection, of 300 years! Jean-Nickolaus Tretter who’s brainchild the Tretter Collection is, was kind enough to give the two Trustees of EQUAL GROUND a tour of the vast archives located at the U of M! Later, they were invited to join the Board of Advisors meeting where the materials from EQUAL GROUND were presented to the Tretter Collection. EQUAL GROUND is one of few overseas organization to contribute materials for archiving with the Tretter Collection. Jean Tretter had this to say about our collection: “I agree the list looks fantastic and it will be an honor to add these materials to the Collection. Just thought you might like to know that you are having an impact in other ways by deciding to archive with us. I mentioned this project when I spoke at the ILGCN and IDAHO Conferences in Moscow this May. The delegates from Belarus were so impressed that they decided to archive their materials with us also as they are not safe in their own country.”

The Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies houses over 30,000 items in a wide variety of media. The collection is international in scope and has materials in approximately 56 languages. It covers all time periods, from a 4,000-year-old phallic statuette from Egypt, up to current editions of GLBT periodicals. Although books are the core of the collection, substantial sections include textiles, glassware, film, music, art works, and three-dimensional objects such as event buttons and furniture. The Archives got started initially with a donation by Jean- Nickolaus Tretter of his valuable collection. Archiving and collecting LGBT materials has been a passion of Jean’s for many, many years and having the University of Minnesota allocating space and resources to build this collection up even further is a dream come true for Jean!

This step to archive EQUAL GROUND’s materials came about last September when Emily met with her college professor and Tretter Advisory Board member Dr. Linnea A. Stenson in Minneapolis. Emily had emailed Dr. Stenson earlier and told her about EQUAL GROUND and its work, so when she arrived in Minneapolis and met with her old college professor it naturally led to the discussion about archiving EQUAL GROUND's materials. The rest as they say is history and hopefully a history that will be remembered way past the 300 years which is the current archival lifespan!

For those LGBT organisations around the world that want their history preserved for the future, please get in touch with Jean Tretter.(click here here to access the Tretter Collection website)

The first Out Games in Montreal 2006 and the International Conference on Human Rights preceding the games as seen through the eyes of Rosanna Flamer-Caldera. Read her article here and view the pictures of one of the most happening events in the LGBTIQ calendar for 2006!

Now that it’s all over, I can reflect on that one week this past July when Montreal came alive with the biggest gathering of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders and Intersex (LGBTI) people the world has ever seen! The First Out Games and the International Human Rights Conference preceding it was an event gargantuan in size but more so, an event that was notably enormous in love and friendship.

Imagine 12 thousand LGBTI athletes and over 1800 LGBTI Conference delegates all converging on one city! A city that opened its doors to this event with great enthusiasm and support. As the Mayor of Montreal Gerald Tremblay intoned: “Montreal welcomes you all in the spirit of love and tolerance that is extended to all of you from around the world who have come here to celebrate diversity in Sport and to celebrate Human Rights for all”.

It was fabulous to be made to feel so welcome, especially for most of us there who have a much harder time in our home countries for just being who we are. For some of us coming from the reality of criminalization and discrimination, this was indeed a welcome that we took to heart, relishing the freedom and opportunity the 2 week long event would give us.

I can reflect now on that week which was filled with emotion, excitement and pride. It was all about people and their stories! It was all about reaffirming that LGBTI Rights ARE Human Rights. It was about a diverse crowd speaking about diverse topics that filled the conference rooms of the Palais des Congrés in downtown Montreal.

I had the pleasure of Co-chairing the opening plenary dinner of the Human Rights Conference which included, as keynote speakers, the Mayor of Montreal - the Hon. Gerald Tremblay, the Minister of Justice for the Government of Quebec - the Hon. Yvon Marcoux and The United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights, Madam Louise Arbor.

More than anything my excitement rose 200% at being seated next to Mark Tewksbury (the Gold medal winner of the 100 backstroke at the Barcelona Games in 1992) at the dinner table which included the key note speakers, the two Co-Secretary Generals of ILGA (myself and Philipp Braun), the two Co-chairs of the Scientific Committee, the first citizen of Switzerland and the 2 Official spokespersons for the Out Games! Meeting him and chatting with him, I couldn’t help being in awe at the courage this man had to come out as a Gay man at a time when he was at the peak of his career, having won gold and silver in Barcelona and Seoul in back to back Olympics. Just thinking of the many endorsements and financial losses he would have sustained just for coming out as a gay athlete is overwhelming.

The years of being an outspoken advocate for gay rights and a role model to millions of LGBT persons in Canada and abroad have not dampened Mark’s enthusiasm for people. His 1000 watt smile lights up the room when he walks in. He never tires of the hundreds of people who come up to talk to him…and it really does not matter whether he is eating a meal, checking his emails or walking around the Conference complex...he always has a smile and encouraging words for them all! It makes me really proud to have been a part of this wonderful celebration and more than anything, being able to say “I hung out with Mark Tewksbury!” During the week we were at the conference we were thrown together several times and I was always blown away by his natural charm and that wonderful smile!

The Opening Plenary and dinner was attended by all 1800 delegates to the conference as well as the media and hundreds of conference volunteers. I had the pleasure to introduce Madam Arbor. In her speech Madam Arbor said: “Neither the existence of national laws, nor the prevalence of custom can ever justify the abuse, attacks, torture and indeed killings that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons are subjected to because of who they are or are perceived to be. Because of the stigma attached to issues surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity, violence against LGBT persons is frequently unreported, undocumented and goes ultimately unpunished. Rarely does it provoke public debate and outrage. This shameful silence is the ultimate rejection of the fundamental principle of universality of rights”. This statement brought home to me the realities of life in Sri Lanka and other countries that continue to criminalize and discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

It was great catching up with old friends and making new ones. EQUAL GROUND was ably represented by Manjula and me at the Human Rights Conference and Amila for the Athletics. Manjula proved to be a natural and handled his very first workshop with great dignity and maturity! Indeed the speakers at all of the sessions of the conference were so dynamic and outspoken. From Gene Robinson (the first gay man to be ordained as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire) to the openly Gay Australian Judge Justice Michael Kirby, Georgina Beyer (first transsexual in the world to be elected mayor and to parliament in New Zealand), openly HIV+ Justice Edwin Cameron (South Africa), Martina Navratilova (generally considered to be one of the greatest female tennis players of all time) to the hundreds of ordinary LGBTI people who had so many wonderful stories to share – the conference was inspiring and informative and a memory that will live with us for a long while.

Add to this the opening ceremonies of the First Out Games in Montréal…a complete overloading of the senses…the sights, the sounds and the wonderful performances by the guest artists including Cirque de Soleil, Martha Wash, Deborah Cox, Jonas, Sylvie Desgroseilliers, Diane Dufresne and the incomparable k.d. lang!!! How proud we were to walk into that Olympic stadium with Harsha our sign bearer (a bright, young Sri Lankan Gay man living in Montreal) representing our little island nation. We marched with the contingent of countries who still criminalize homosexuality and we probably got the loudest cheer for being there!

Although I haven’t mentioned much about the Gay Games in Chicago a few weeks before the Out Games, (only because I was not there to share in those wonderful experiences) I must mention here that we are so proud to have sent a team of three for these games. Although they did not fare as well as the girls from the WSG who won many medals (Congratulations team WSG!!) we were just proud to represent our country and our organization. Well done Tami, Amila and Pinto (who made it to the finals of the 100m!).

Next stop Copenhagen!

EQUAL GROUND's INTERN/VOLUNTEER PROGRAM is proving to be quite a success. At the beginning of this year (2006) we had 2 volunteers from the American Jewish World Services assist us with strategic and financial planning. They were an enormous help to EG and we thank them for taking the time to spend 3 months in Sri Lanka helping out the organisation.

"We feel it's been an amazing experience and very productive. EG is blessed with a highly capable and committed Board. They are all people with extraordinarily busy lives yet they are making time for EG. There is much to be said for the passion which they feel about the goals of the organization. In addition, they are really smart ---- both IQ and EQ. It has been such a pleasure to work with the five who we have met". Judith and David Sanders, Volunteers.

Soon after, in May 2006, we had an intern from the Masters program at the American University in Washington D.C. (USA).

"This program to me, is a huge success. There is much knowledge to be gained from interning with EQUAL GROUND. My time in Sri Lanka was enriched working with an organisation that has so much passion and commitment to it's cause. I have no hesitation in recommending EQUAL GROUND. I am certain it will provide the same, wonderful experience as it provided me". Hope Harrison, Intern.

If you wish to join our INTERN/VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, please drop us an email at: equalground@gmail.com or info@equal-ground.org.

We will be happy to provide you with more details.
